Speaker: Bill Phippen
Topic: Kathleen Butler “Godmother of the Sydney Harbour Bridge”
Kathleen M. Butler was nicknamed the "Godmother of Sydney Harbour Bridge" and also known as the "Bridge Girl”. She was John Bradfield’s secretary. Bradfield had been working on the audacious project to build a monumental bridge over Sydney harbour, alongside a city metro network, since he proposed it in 1912. The First World War and the changes of government threatened these plans. When Kathleen realised that the new government wanted to stop plans for a bridge, she warned Bradfield and he was able to leave the country so that the plans in place could go ahead.
